Athena, daughter of Zeus and Metis, is the goddess of not only war, but also the goddess of wisdom, the arts, industry, justice, and skill. Zeus was scared Metis would have a son stronger then him, so he swallowed her. Metis decided to make a robe and helmet for her daughter. The hammering on the helmet gave Zeus huge headaches, so Hephaestus, Athena's half brother, opened his head and out came Athena, fully grown. She was the favorite child of Zeus and was even entrusted with Zeus's shield, Aegis. (Athena Encyclopedia).
